The guide makes the day. The same names recur across months of reviews — Mauricio, Jorge, Delio, Dania, Ximena, Juan — and travellers credit them with the pace, the shade, the food recommendation and the timing that beats the coaches.
Getting there early is the whole trick at Chichén Itzá. Reviewers on the 05:30 pickup describe being first through the gate with the site effectively empty; the ones on later departures describe crowds and heat.
The language split is the most common complaint. On a shared van the guide works in English and Spanish in turn, and when the balance slips the English speakers notice. It comes up more than once above, and it is what the private days exist to solve.
Not every day is perfect. A boat that broke down at Celestún, a guide who whistled from seven in the morning, an English-language tour that ran mostly in Spanish, and a walking tour in May that was too hot for an older traveller — all of them are above, at the rating the traveller gave them.
